Kenya’s push for expanded trade relations took center stage at the AMCHAM Business Summit as Investment, Trade, and Industry Cabinet Secretary, Rebecca Miano EGH, held pivotal discussions with Walmart and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. These meetings signal a promising new chapter in Kenya-U.S. trade relations, with potential benefits for both economies.

A high-level team from Walmart, including Andrea Albright, Executive Vice President of Sourcing, and Sarah Thorn, Group Director of Global Government Affairs (Supply Chain & Trade), is currently in Kenya on an exploratory mission. The team has lined up 24 Business-to-Business meetings with Kenyan firms specializing in agricultural and apparel sectors. Walmart’s interest underscores Kenya’s appeal as a sourcing hub, potentially linking Kenyan producers to Walmart’s extensive retail network spanning over 10,500 stores across 19 countries.

CS Rebecca Miano expressed optimism about the prospects of this visit. “Kenya has a unique opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities in producing quality agricultural and apparel products to Walmart,” she said. “We are hopeful that this could pave the way for a strategic partnership, offering Kenyan businesses unprecedented access to the expansive U.S. market.”

In another significant development at the AMCHAM Business Summit, CS Miano engaged with Kendra L. Gaither, President of the U.S-Africa Business Center at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and her team. The discussions centered on Kenya’s role as a key player in the global investment landscape and its potential to attract further investment from the United States.

“The recognition and affirmation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce regarding Kenya’s investment potential is encouraging,” CS Miano commented. “We have agreed to intensify our dialogue towards fostering enhanced trade partnerships, aligning with the core objectives of my Ministry.”

These engagements highlight Kenya’s rising profile as an attractive investment destination within Africa. By forging stronger ties with global giants like Walmart and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Kenya aims to stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and integrate further into the global supply chain.

Stakeholders and industry leaders are optimistic that these nascent partnerships will bear fruit, delivering tangible economic benefits for Kenya and reinforcing its position as a key trading partner for the United States. The AMCHAM Business Summit continues to serve as a vital platform for nurturing these essential relationships and exploring collaborative opportunities for mutual growth.
