BUSINESS LEADERS: What Do They Value in Their Teams?
Dr. Esther Muchemi, the Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Samchi Group of companies, is renowned for her blessed and God-friendly leadership. As an inspiring and mentoring figure to many, Dr. Muchemi shares her valuable insights on what business leaders appreciate in their teams:
1. Honesty and Integrity “I need to trust you with the assignment and the assets I have given, including our brand. No frauds of any nature, including timekeeping.”
2. Focus and Consistency “We keep at it until we get the results. The ability to follow through is important to me. We have remained there in both bad and good times. We love it when people depict this.”
3. Fairness and Equality “It’s both ways, from us and employees alike. Deliver what is expected from you in exchange for your wages, for example. Be fair in the sacrifices you make. Accept fair feedback. No exploitation of any nature.”
4. Care and Concern “It makes us real. Humaneness is good for the leaders too. They also have feelings. Be good to them and they will be good to you. Love covers a multitude of sins. Scratch my back, and I will scratch yours too.”
5. Spirit of an Entrepreneur “Take a risk. Identify the problem. Give a solution to the problem. That’s it. That’s what an entrepreneur is all about. That’s what you must show in a business environment. Multiply what’s given; that’s good stewardship.”
6. God Above All “Oh yes, how else do you make it in this tough world? Faith is personal, but morals are universal. Fear of God mitigates a lot of evil, in my personal view.”
A Call to Reflect and Engage
Dr. Muchemi encourages a dialogue among business leaders and employees:
To Employees: What do you think your employer would love to see from you?
To Employers: What qualities and values are important to you in your team?
“Let’s keep going, assuming numbers will come if we do what is right. Let’s have a conversation and reflect on these values.”
