Kirinyaga County leaders, led by Mwea MP Mary Maingi and Gichugu MP Robert Gichuimu, on Monday paid a courtesy call to Principal Secretary for Irrigation, Ephantus Kimotho, CBS, at Maji House. The discussions focused on planned and ongoing irrigation projects in Kirinyaga County as part of the government’s initiative to increase areas under irrigation, enhance production, and improve the market for farm produce.
The meeting highlighted the completion and commissioning of the Mwea Irrigation Development Project, aiming to unlock 10,000 acres for food production and enable double cropping. This significant development is expected to bolster the region’s agricultural productivity and food security.
Also in attendance were Irrigation Secretary Eng. Vincent Kabuti, OGW, Deputy Director of Irrigation and Drainage Daniel Odero, CEO of the National Irrigation Authority Eng. Charles Muasya, MBS, and Incharge MIAD Vincent Kipngetich, among others.
The discussions emphasized the critical role of irrigation in enhancing agricultural output and the importance of collaborative efforts between local leaders and government officials to ensure the success of these initiatives. The leaders expressed their commitment to advancing irrigation projects to benefit the farmers and the community in Kirinyaga County.
