The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a critical safety statement following a spillage of sodium cyanide in Rironi, an incident that poses serious health and environmental risks.
The accident occurred on July 20, 2024, involving a truck transporting custom-bonded goods, specifically sodium cyanide (NaCN), en route to Kampala, Uganda. The truck, carrying 414 drums each weighing 50 kg, experienced a self-involving accident, causing significant concern due to the hazardous nature of the cargo.
Accident Details and Immediate Response
Out of the 414 drums, 386 were recovered intact and transferred to another truck. Unfortunately, seven drums were retrieved by local residents. The accident scene was swiftly cordoned off by nearby police, but not before four drums were compromised, spilling sodium cyanide pellets in the cargo container and onto the road as members of the public attempted to access the cargo.
NEMA, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, Kenya National Police Service, and a National Government officer, is leading the accident response measures. These measures include the clean-up and clearing of the accident scene, public sensitization about the dangers of the chemical, and retrieval of the missing containers. So far, no casualties or injuries have been reported.
Safety Warning to the Public
NEMA has emphasized the extreme toxicity and hazardous nature of the spilled sodium cyanide. The public is strongly cautioned against coming into contact with the containers or their contents. Sodium cyanide should not be opened, spilled into surface water, or come into contact with acids or any chemicals.
Emergency Contact Information
Residents in possession of the missing containers or those who spot any spills are urged to contact the area chief, the nearest police post, or call the NEMA incident hotline at 0741 101100 immediately.
NEMA, under the skilled leadership of Managing Director Mamo B. Mamo, is actively managing the remediation measures and investigation in cooperation with the owners of the cargo. The authority is committed to ensuring the safety and health of the public and the environment during this critical time.
