Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has called on Kenyan girls working in the gulf to be worry of Kenyan men pausing as boyfriends but whose target is to siphon their hard earned cash.
Sonko on Tuesday said that he has handled several cases of girls getting stranded in the gulf despite having worked for many years,but investing their salaries in men who hit them online in such of ‘love’.
Sonko said this a day after he came to the rescue of a lady who had been conned Sh1.2 million by a Kamba artist called Dominic Mwasia.According to the lady, Dominic used a friend called Mulwa alias Kilonzi and another unknown man to defraud the unsuspecting lady who has all the printed MPESA messages linking the three to the fraud.
Dominic and Mulwa were arrested and presented to Matuu Court where they were released on a bond of Ksh 1million.
Police are still looking for the third suspect.
The lady in question has spent five years in Qatar only to return home empty handed.She admitted that during this period, Dominic had fleeces her finances, making her unable to help her family back home and even missed key family events.
Following this,Sonko has called on agencies that are transporting Kenyans and specifically young girls to the gulf to impart financial literacy on them before they leave.He said girls have invested in fraudulent schemes, masquerading boyfriends and family members with ill motive.
” Most of these girls are school dropouts and do not know where to invest the little amount they get.So they end up sending the money to boyfriends and conmen who claim to be investing on their behalf,” Sonko said.
He has also called on Kenyan banks and financial institutions to find a way of helping the girls to invest.
