This morning, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Dr. Erustus Kanga, alongside WWF Kenya CEO Mr. Mohamed Awer, inaugurated a new security operation command center in Solio Game Reserve. The installation of Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) thermal cameras, undertaken by WWF with support from Ol Pejeta Conservancy, aims to provide round-the-clock security, particularly benefiting the reserve’s rhino population.
The cutting-edge FLIR thermal cameras will enhance the reserve’s security operations, allowing for continuous monitoring and rapid response to any potential threats. This development marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to protect Kenya’s wildlife from poaching and other dangers.
World Ranger Day Celebrations
Later in the afternoon, Dr. Kanga joined the global community in commemorating World Ranger Day at Nanyuki Stadium, honoring the dedicated wildlife conservation rangers. In his address, the Director General emphasized the importance of the day, which recognizes the brave individuals who dedicate their lives to protecting the planet’s most valuable natural and cultural resources.
Dr. Kanga highlighted the critical role rangers play in global conservation efforts and the often-overlooked risks they face. “Rangers are the unsung heroes of wildlife conservation, handling duties that include law enforcement, confronting poachers, battling wildfires, conservation education, ecological monitoring, responding to emergencies, and undertaking risky rescue missions,” he said.
Recognizing the Efforts of Rangers
The Director General noted that World Ranger Day has grown in importance over the years, spotlighting the vital work of rangers and honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. He praised the rangers for their strong response to KWS’s conservation-led campaign, “Tunza Mali Yako,” showcasing their crucial role in nurturing and protecting Kenya’s natural heritage.
“As the rangers’ team leader, I commend rangers across all conservation areas for their outstanding work and assure them of their recognition both within the service and globally,” Dr. Kanga added.
