Tom Odege, the Secretary General of the Union of Kenya Civil Servants, has issued a stern warning to the government, urging them to allocate funds for the agreed salary increments for civil servants or face a nationwide strike next month. Odege emphasized that civil servants expect the government to honor the salary increase as stipulated by law, leaving no room for excuses.
Odege, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Nyatike constituency, pointed out that the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has no authority to halt the agreed salary increment, as it was mandated by a court ruling. He stressed that any changes to this arrangement can only be made through the courts.
“The SRC purporting to be deferring a salary increment is unacceptable,” Odege stated firmly.
The SG highlighted that the salary increase had been budgeted for in the previous financial year, and therefore, should not be linked to the Finance Bill 2024, which was recently withdrawn after nationwide protests.
Civil servants are now waiting for the government’s response, with the potential of a strike looming if their demands are not met.
