In a move to boost the mining sector in Nandi and Kisumu counties, Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Environment, and Natural Resources, Hon. Hassan Ali Joho, led a high-profile familiarization tour aimed at engaging stakeholders and exploring ways to accelerate investment opportunities in the region.
Accompanied by Principal Secretaries Elijah Mwangi and Betsy Njagi, CS Joho emphasized the importance of involving host communities in mining ventures, ensuring that the benefits of these investments cascade directly to the local people.
During the tour, CS Joho underscored the centrality of community involvement, stating, “Investors must not only involve the people in their projects but also ensure that the benefits from their investments are shared with the communities.” This approach, he noted, is crucial for sustainable development and the long-term success of mining operations in the region.
The tour, which included a visit to key mining sites and public engagements, was attended by a host of local leaders, including Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, Deputy Governor Dr. Yulita Cheruiyot, County Women Representative Hon. Cynthia Jepkosgei, and area MCA. Their presence highlighted the strong collaboration between national and county governments in promoting mining as a driver of economic growth.
To support the growth of artisanal mining, CS Joho called on county leadership to assist in the registration of miners into marketing cooperatives. “These cooperatives will enable targeted state support in capacity building, financial linkages, and market access,” said the CS. He announced that with the formation and commissioning of Artisanal Mining Committees, miners in cooperatives would soon be issued with mining permits upon application.
Addressing the issue of illegal mining operations, CS Joho labeled them as a significant threat to Kenya’s economic well-being and called for a sustained multi-agency crackdown to eradicate the vice. To bolster enforcement efforts, the CS commissioned a vehicle dedicated to supporting regional enforcement activities.
The Department of Mining has also taken proactive steps to support the sector’s growth by commissioning Artisanal Mining Committees in both Nandi and Kisumu counties. These committees are tasked with enhancing the issuance of artisanal mining licenses and have trained members of miners’ marketing cooperatives on management, legal requirements, and marketing skills.
The tour also included an assessment visit to Karebe Gold Mines, where CS Joho reviewed the processes along the gold value chain. He later joined members of the Chemase community for a public engagement session on mining issues, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring that mining activities benefit local communities and contribute to the nation’s economic prosperity.
This initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening the mining sector in Kenya, with a focus on community engagement, sustainable practices, and the formalization of artisanal mining activities.
