Mandera South MP, Hon. Ibrahim Haro Kore, has emphasized the critical role that professional bodies play in the development of technical knowledge, which is essential for fostering a highly-skilled workforce in specialized fields across the country.

Speaking in support of ongoing reforms in Kenya’s mining sector, Hon. Kore noted that these professional bodies are central pillars in national development efforts. His comments came during an interactive engagement session held by the Principal Secretary for Mining, Elijah Mwangi, with members of the Geologists Registration Board (GRB).

PS Mwangi led the discussions, focusing on strengthening the operational capacity of the GRB. The aim is to transform the board into a robust entity that can support the accelerated growth of geological professionals in Kenya. This move is expected to enhance the professional capacity of geologists and allow for their strategic placement in critical sectors, including the construction of buildings, roads, and dams.

“Geologists are indispensable assets for national development,” said Hon. Kore, echoing the sentiments of PS Mwangi. “Their expertise is vital in several key areas of economic growth, including groundwater tapping, mining, power generation, construction, and road building.”

The revitalization of the GRB is seen as a crucial step in ensuring that geologists in Kenya are well-equipped to contribute effectively to the country’s economic development. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader agenda to strengthen the technical workforce in specialized fields.

Hon. Kore welcomed the dedication and efforts of the GRB members, commending them for their commitment to reawakening what he described as a “sleeping giant.” He assured the board of the State Department’s readiness to support all activities aimed at positioning the GRB as a key player in providing technical guidance and maintaining high professional standards within the geological field.

“As a State Department, we are ready and keen to support all activities geared towards placing the GRB at a strategic position where it will effectively offer technical guidance and entrench professional standards for geologists in Kenya,” PS Mwangi reiterated.

This engagement is part of ongoing efforts to accelerate reforms in the mining sector, which is increasingly recognized as a crucial component of Kenya’s economic transformation agenda. The involvement of professional bodies like the GRB is expected to play a significant role in driving these reforms and ensuring the sustainable development of the sector.
