Nairobi, Kenya — Weekends are a peak travel period for many Kenyans, with public transport playing a crucial role in ferrying passengers to various destinations. Whether traveling upcountry, enjoying a weekend getaway, or simply taking the family out for an outing, public transportation becomes essential for many.

Given the increase in traffic during weekends, Albert Karakacha, President of the Matatu Owners Association, has urged drivers to prioritize safety on the roads. In a statement, Karakacha highlighted the importance of caution, sobriety, and responsible driving, especially during these high-traffic periods.

“Weekends see many Kenyans traveling for different reasons—some upcountry, others to recreational facilities to ease the week’s fatigue. With that in mind, we encourage all drivers to remain cautious, stay sober, and drive carefully,” said Karakacha.

The Matatu Owners Association also emphasized the need for drivers to respect traffic rules, remain patient on the road, and prioritize the well-being of their passengers.

As public transport becomes central to weekend travel, the association hopes that these safety measures will help reduce accidents and ensure a smooth journey for all road users.
