Nairobi, Kenya – September 17, 2024 – Eng. Wilfred Oginga, Director in charge of Urban Road Planning & Design at the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), today presented at the Sector Data Sharing Forum on Road Safety held at Barabara Plaza Auditorium. During his address, Eng. Oginga underscored the critical need for robust emergency response systems and highlighted KURA’s ongoing efforts to improve urban traffic management through advanced technologies.

Focusing on the increasing demand for effective traffic control in urban areas, Eng. Oginga emphasized KURA’s commitment to automation and the implementation of Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS). These systems, he noted, are designed to streamline traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety in rapidly growing cities like Nairobi.

“One of the key tools to curb traffic violations and improve road safety is e-policing,” Eng. Oginga stated, pointing to its potential to ease traffic management and ensure compliance with road rules through technology-driven enforcement.

As part of KURA’s larger agenda to enhance urban road safety, Eng. Oginga also announced the signalization of 185 junctions in Nairobi. This project aims to modernize traffic control at key intersections, improving both traffic efficiency and safety for drivers and pedestrians alike.

The forum, which gathered stakeholders from various sectors, focused on data-driven solutions to road safety and ways to integrate technology into urban infrastructure to address the growing traffic challenges in Kenya’s cities. Eng. Oginga’s presentation was widely praised for its forward-looking approach to urban traffic management and the role of technology in shaping the future of road safety.

KURA’s initiatives, particularly the adoption of ITS and e-policing, are seen as crucial steps toward addressing Nairobi’s traffic problems and enhancing safety on urban roads across Kenya.
