Barely a week after Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi declared his bid for Nairobi Governor’s seat, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has endorsed him.
Mr Odinga’s move comes weeks after his wife Mama Idah, publicly endorsed the second-time legislator for the top City job.
Prior to the declaration day, a section of city politicians had tried to launch scathing attacks against Mr Wanyonyi dismissing his ambition to be the third elected Governor of Nairobi.
The ODM leader, while addressing Azimio la Mama event in Nairobi on Thursday, November 18, came short of declaring the second-term legislators as the ODM’s preferred gubernatorial candidate in the 2022 elections when he urged him to address City challenges.
He told Mr Wanyonyi, who was in attendance, to ensure that city markets are clean to offer conducive working environment for traders.
“I am happy that I am joined by the incoming governor of Nairobi here,” he said as he responded to the concern raised.
Mr Odinga was responding to a concern raised by one of the participants who was concerned about the state of city markets and it was at that point that he recognized the ODM MP.
So far, it is only Mr Wanyonyi who has declared interest in flying the ODM party’s flag in the race for the governorship of the city.
During his declaration, Mr Wanyonyi laid down 10 strategic plans that would guide him should he be elected.
In the 10-point agenda, he said he foresees a transformed Nairobi into an economic powerhouse and a real smart city.
He said he is committed to transforming Nairobi into an economic powerhouse and a smart City.
One that is built on strong ICT platforms with seamless integration of services that are affordable and accessible.
“For the last 15 years, I have served Nairobi, first as a nominated councilor and then as an elected MP for Westlands constituency since 2013. Fellow residents of Nairobi, it is with humility that I offer to serve you as the next governor,” he said.
And as she vouched for Mr Wanyonyi’s candidacy for the governor’s seat, Mama Idah described him as visionary, focused and one with integrity and capable of running the city.
“Tim is like my son, and he has a vision. We will ensure that we support him so that he becomes the next Nairobi governor in 2022 under the ODM party,” she said.
Mr Wanyonyi has pegged his bid on his admirable performance as Westlands MP for two consecutive terms.
