Nairobi South Member of County Assembly, Waithera Chege has expressed deep concern regarding the escalating harassment and extortion faced by street hawkers at the hands of County askaris.
This concern has been fueled by a distressing video capturing the mistreatment of a disabled woman by city Askaris.
MCA Waithera has raised an alarming issue, harkening back to a troublesome past.
She highlighted the surge in arbitrary arrests, unwarranted harassment, and financial extortion perpetrated against hawkers by the city inspectorate, which undeniably infringes on the fundamental rights and freedoms of the residence.
Waithera is calling upon the Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs committee to conduct a comprehensive investigation and present a report on the hawker’s assault.
She pointed to a circulating video depicting a heated argument between a hawker and a uniformed city inspectorate officer, while other officers in civilian attire appear to manhandle a seemingly disabled hawker.
Furthermore, she is urging the Justice and Legal committee to address various critical issues, including the measures being taken by the Johnson Sakaja administration to put an end to the notorious and heavy-handed treatment of residents and traders by the City Inspectorate Officers.
