Desperate residents of Ghetto Village, Kiamaiko ward in Mathare Sub-county petitioned the Nairobi City County Assembly to help them claim back a piece of land belonging to them but currently allocated to a private developer under mysterious circumstances.

In their petition, they claim that the village was established in 1970 as a decanting site for victims of fire which swept Huruma Village where close to 1050 households were affected.

Plans to develop and upgrade the informal settlement were thwarted when partners and facilitators realised the ownership of the land was contested. This was back in 2009 and the partners pulled out.

The petition presented by Kiamaiko Ward MCA Joseph Ndung’u at the Assembly on Tuesday, read that: “A letter was sent to the Commissioner of lands the then Director of City Planning to revoke the title deed issued irregularly for plot number 209/12290 the same was never acted upon. We feel short-changed and unfairly treated since the land was greatly reduced from its original size to a quarter and the ministry of lands irregularly awarding to one individual without consulting or notifying the residents.”

The petitioners called on the county assembly’s intervention to initiate the recovery process.

“We recommend and pray that the land that was illegally allocated to one Francis Mbau Murege be reverted to Ghetto Lands and Housing Cooperative Society and the title deed issued in his favour be revoked,” MCA Ndung’u told journalists at City Hall on Tuesday.

The also want the department of lands to transfer and register the land to its rightful owners.
