In a move to enhance sustainable waste management practices and protect the environment, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has announced a transition to the use of biodegradable garbage bags for organic waste collection across Kenya.
Established under the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act (EMCA) No. 8 of 1999, NEMA has been at the forefront of environmental conservation efforts in the country. This latest directive comes in the wake of the Kenyan Government’s 2017 ban on plastic carrier bags, including garbage bags and bin liners.
Key Directives
Under the Sustainable Waste Management Act, 2022, which requires the segregation of non-hazardous waste into organic and non-organic fractions, NEMA has issued the following directives:
- Segregation of Organic Waste: Within 90 days from the date of the notice, all households, private and public sector institutions, religious organizations, and organizers of private and public events must segregate organic waste and place it in 100% biodegradable garbage bags or bin liners.
- Prohibition of Conventional Plastic Bags: The use of conventional plastic bags or bin liners for the collection of organic waste is now prohibited. Instead, only biodegradable options should be used.
- Separate Collection and Processing: The segregated organic waste should be collected separately from other waste types and transported to designated Material Recovery Facilities for further processing.
- Compliance by Waste Service Providers: All County Governments and private waste service providers licensed by NEMA are mandated to provide their clients with 100% biodegradable garbage bags or bin liners.
Leadership and Vision
NEMA, under the leadership of Managing Director and CEO Mamo B. Mamo, continues to champion environmentally sound management practices. This directive underscores NEMA’s commitment to reducing environmental pollution and promoting sustainable waste management in Kenya.
Call for Compliance
Residents, institutions, and waste service providers are urged to comply with these directives to protect Kenya’s environment and contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
The transition to biodegradable garbage bags for organic waste collection is a significant step towards achieving a more sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management system in Kenya. NEMA encourages everyone to embrace these changes and play their part in safeguarding the environment for future generations
