The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has expressed deep condolences to the families and relatives of the twelve individuals who tragically lost their lives in a fatal accident at Nithi Bridge on the Embu-Meru highway. The accident occurred on the night of August 31, 2024, when a 14-seater Toyota Hiace collided with an oncoming vehicle.
The victims were part of a group traveling back to Nairobi after seeking parental blessings in Meru. According to police reports, the driver of the Toyota Hiace was unfamiliar with the highway and mistakenly used a climbing lane while descending towards Nithi Bridge, resulting in a head-on collision with a pick-up truck. Tharaka Nithi police commander Zaccheaus Ng’eno confirmed the incident, stating, “The motor vehicle that was coming from the Meru direction is not a motor vehicle that regularly uses this road. We may assume that the driver did not keep to his lane as was expected of him.”
Following the accident, the twelve bodies were removed from the scene, while two seriously injured individuals were rushed to Chogoria Mission Hospital and Chuka Hospital for specialized treatment.
In response to the tragic incident, MOA President Mr. Albert Karakacha extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He also called for urgent government action to address safety concerns at Nithi Bridge, a notorious accident blackspot. His message highlighted the need for increased vigilance among drivers and passengers, stating, “Pole for the family and we demand the government to do something about Nithi River. To our drivers, let’s be careful and use road signs. Passengers, know the name of your driver as you board a matatu.”
The Nithi Bridge area has long been recognized as a hazardous section of the Embu-Meru highway, with numerous accidents occurring over the years. The MOA’s call for improved road safety measures reflects growing concerns over the recurring tragedies at this location. The association emphasizes the importance of road safety awareness, urging drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and passengers to remain vigilant during their travels.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unfamiliar roads and the critical need for comprehensive safety measures to prevent further loss of life. As the affected families mourn their loved ones, the MOA and the public at large are hopeful that this tragedy will prompt swift action to make Nithi Bridge and other accident-prone areas safer for all road users.
