The State Department for Correctional Services has introduced two advanced paving block molding and concrete block-making machines, marking a significant step toward modernizing Kenya’s correctional facilities.

During the commissioning ceremony at the Kenya Prisons Motor Vehicle Depot in Nairobi’s Industrial Area, Correctional Services Principal Secretary Salome Beacco announced that the machines will initially produce paving blocks for compounds within correctional facilities nationwide.

“This initiative is part of a broader reform agenda to transform prisons into centers of excellence,” said PS Beacco. She emphasized the focus on equipping inmates and staff with practical skills through training programs designed to teach them how to operate the new machines.

The paving block molding machine boasts a production capacity of 2,000 blocks or hollow bricks in an 8-hour shift, significantly enhancing efficiency in facility upgrades. Its integrated mixer can handle a one-tonne mixture, using quarry dust, quarry chippings, and cement to produce 75 paving blocks capable of covering 3 square meters per batch.

PS Beacco also announced plans to equip central workshops and prison industries with modern tools to support ongoing reforms. She called on staff to uphold integrity and adopt prudent fiscal practices to ensure the success of these initiatives.

This development is expected to improve prison environments and provide inmates with marketable skills, supporting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. By focusing on skill-building and self-reliance, the Department of Correctional Services aims to create lasting change in Kenya’s correctional system.
