Hon. Martha Karua has hailed Ugandan activist and poet Sam Mugumya for his powerful poetry collection “We Refuse to Be Victims”, launched in Nairobi. Speaking at the event, Karua praised Mugumya’s resilience and use of art to challenge oppression, calling his work “a continuation of Africa’s liberation heritage.”

Mugumya, joining virtually from an undisclosed location, shared how his poems—written during eight years of imprisonment in the DRC—kept his spirit alive.

Karua condemned growing oppression in East Africa, citing abductions, disappearances, and flawed policies in Kenya and Uganda. “From Sam Mugumya’s story, we learn that fear is not an option. Surrender is not an option,” she stated.

She urged Kenyans and Africans to unite beyond borders in the fight for justice: “Oppression in one nation fuels suffering in another. Our struggle for freedom must be collective, grounded in shared values.”

Karua also called for national solidarity, stressing that even those who regret past actions should be welcomed into the movement for change. “Let us not drown in oppression—rise and resist, like Sam Mugumya,” she urged.
