Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka paid glowing tribute to the late President Mwai Kibaki during the 2nd Annual Mwai Kibaki Memorial Lecture in Nairobi, while sharply criticizing the government over recent actions he called an “assault on democracy.”

Speaking at Serena Hotel, Kalonzo hailed Kibaki as a visionary leader and economic architect whose legacy included delivering Kenya’s 2010 Constitution and fostering reconciliation after the 2007 post-election crisis.

“President Kibaki never sought personal praise,” Kalonzo noted, recalling Kibaki’s humility even when leaders attempted to name infrastructure after him. “He asked, ‘Doesn’t this road already have a name?’ That was the measure of the man.”

Kalonzo, who served as Kibaki’s Vice President during the Grand Coalition era, praised his leadership during challenging times, describing him as “a man of vision, healing, and principle.”

However, his speech took a critical turn as he condemned Thursday’s police teargassing of Butere Girls High School students during a drama festival in Nakuru.

“To teargas schoolgirls and journalists is the most egregious assault on democracy,” Kalonzo said. “This Ruto regime has crossed the Rubicon.”
