The Kenya Prisons Service last night celebrated its top-performing athletes in a colourful awards ceremony held at a Nairobi hotel, recognizing their contributions to the country’s growing athletic prestige.

Presided over by Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco, the event aimed to motivate officers and acknowledge their achievements on both national and international stages.

Dr. Beacco commended the athletes for their dedication and called for sustained investment in the untapped sporting talent within the service. “We must nurture and support the potential within our ranks. These athletes bring honour to the service and the nation,” she said.

Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh reaffirmed the service’s commitment to developing talent and rewarding excellence. One of the night’s biggest highlights was the promotion of Corporal Peter Mwangi to Sergeant after he clinched gold in the shot put at the World Masters’ Championships in Florida, USA, with a 14.79-meter throw.

Other notable honorees included Regina Mulatya, who bagged silver in both Triple Jump and Long Jump, and Sergeant Ibrahim Muya, who clocked 8.2 seconds to win silver in the 60-meter sprint. Senior Superintendent Elizabeth Muthoka was recognized for her fourth-place finish in the women’s 400m finals.

Boxing standout Sergeant Rayton Okwiri was also feted for winning in Mauritius and retaining his title as the reigning African Boxing Union Middleweight Champion.

The Kenya Prisons women’s cross-country team was celebrated for finishing third in the national championships. Brian Chepkorir, the 2025 national champion, led the team alongside standout performers Abigael Chelagat, Rebecca Mwangi, Loise Chemning, Millicent Nyambane, Lillian Odira, and Miriam Cherop.

The event underscored the Kenya Prisons Service’s growing legacy in athletics and its dedication to supporting sporting excellence.
