Principal Secretary for Gender, Ann Wangombe, is championing the inclusion of women with disabilities in Kenya’s climate governance, urging a deliberate shift toward policies that are accessible, equitable, and responsive to marginalized groups.

Speaking during a high-level stakeholder forum under the Strevow Initiative, PS Wangombe underscored the disproportionate impact of climate change on women with disabilities, citing systemic gender inequality and disability-related barriers as dual challenges that must be urgently addressed.

“Women with disabilities face a double burden,” she noted. “Climate change only amplifies these inequalities. Inclusive and participatory climate governance is not optional—it is essential.”

The Strevow Initiative brings together government, civil society, and development partners to promote social inclusion in climate adaptation. PS Wangombe called on all stakeholders to prioritize actions that center vulnerable voices in decision-making and implementation.

“We must go beyond tokenism,” she said. “Women with disabilities must be part of the process from the start—not as an afterthought, but as key contributors.”

Stakeholders at the forum pledged to align projects with inclusive climate frameworks and engage women with disabilities in grassroots adaptation efforts.

PS Wangombe also advocated for disaggregated data collection to inform evidence-based planning, saying, “If we can’t measure it, we can’t manage it. Gender and disability data must guide all interventions.”

Her remarks were widely welcomed as a bold step toward reshaping Kenya’s climate policy to reflect the needs of all citizens.

“Inclusive governance is not just about fairness—it’s about building effective, resilient communities,” she concluded.

PS Wangombe’s leadership marks a pivotal moment in Kenya’s climate journey, positioning the Ministry of Gender at the forefront of rights-based, inclusive environmental action.
