PS Kello Harsama Leads Tree Planting and Food Distribution Drive in Marsabit

Principal Secretary for the State Department for ASALs and Regional Development, Kello Harsama, on Wednesday spearheaded a major tree planting and food distribution exercise at the historic Kubi Gadamoji cultural shrine in Sagante/Jaldesa Ward, Marsabit County.
He was joined by a high-powered delegation including Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali, Marsabit County Woman Representative Naomi Waqo, and NDMA CEO Hared Hassan, highlighting the government’s commitment to coordinated action in supporting vulnerable communities.
The exercise served dual purposes: advancing reforestation efforts in the arid region and providing critical food aid to households severely affected by prolonged drought conditions.
Speaking at the event, PS Harsama emphasized the importance of building long-term resilience among communities in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) through sustainable environmental programs and timely humanitarian interventions.
“Environmental conservation and humanitarian support must go hand in hand if we are to secure the future of our ASAL communities,” Harsama noted. “Tree planting symbolizes our commitment to fighting climate change, while food distribution responds to the immediate needs of our people.”
The event sent a powerful message of unity and government resolve in addressing the twin challenges of climate change and food insecurity facing Marsabit and the broader ASAL region.
