Power of Mercy Advisory Committee (POMAC) CEO Lydia Muriuki has praised President William Ruto for exercising his constitutional authority under Article 133 to grant clemency to 57 inmates—56 Kenyans and one foreign national—across the country’s prison facilities.

Speaking following the issuance of the presidential pardon, Muriuki described the decision as a powerful gesture of compassion and restorative justice. “Pursuant to Article 133 of the Constitution and on the advice of POMAC, His Excellency the President has granted pardon to fifty-seven long-term prisoners,” she confirmed.

In addition to the individual pardons, President Ruto issued a General Amnesty affecting thousands more, including:

  • All prisoners sentenced to six months or less.

  • All inmates with less than six months remaining on their sentences.

Muriuki emphasized the broader social impact of the clemency move, noting that it reflects a progressive approach to criminal justice—one that recognizes rehabilitation and the importance of second chances.

“This is a milestone in our national commitment to restorative justice. It offers renewed hope and opportunity for those who have demonstrated reform and are ready to reintegrate into society,” she said.

The clemency aligns with Kenya’s broader efforts to decongest prisons and promote a humane justice system that balances accountability with mercy. Through the President’s action, thousands of families now have a reason to reunite and rebuild.

The Power of Mercy Advisory Committee continues to vet and recommend deserving cases, ensuring that acts of clemency uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and public interest.
