Nairobi, Kenya – Principal Secretary for Labour and Skills Development, Shadrack Mwadime, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the rights and working conditions of domestic workers in Kenya, following a high-level meeting with the Centre for Domestic Training and Development (CDTD) and Oxfam Kenya.

The meeting comes in the wake of President William Ruto’s Labour Day directive to ratify ILO Conventions 189 and 190, which safeguard domestic workers’ rights. PS Mwadime announced that a multi-stakeholder forum is in the pipeline to engage partners ahead of public participation on the ratification process.

He also pledged government support for this year’s International Domestic Workers Day, to be observed on June 16, and acknowledged CDTD’s leadership in organizing the event.

Discussions also covered broader initiatives such as the Tayari Decent Work Project, World Day Against Child Labour 2025, and reporting obligations under Alliance 8.7. PS Mwadime emphasized the critical role of civil society in driving inclusive, rights-based labour reforms.

“We are fully committed to promoting decent work and ensuring domestic workers are treated with dignity and fairness,” he said.

The meeting signals growing momentum toward more just and equitable labour practices across Kenya.
