Kenya Reaffirms Unwavering Support for Raila Odinga’s AUC Chairmanship Bid

As the African Union Commission (AUC) elections draw closer, the Government of Kenya has reiterated its firm support for The Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga’s candidature, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the continental body toward greater unity, economic transformation, and institutional efficiency.
Over the past few months, Mr. Odinga has undertaken a vigorous and strategic campaign, directly engaging more than 40 African Heads of State and securing widespread backing across the continent. His bid has received full endorsement from the East African Community (EAC), key allies of Kenya, and influential pan-African stakeholders, reflecting broad confidence in his leadership and vision for the African Union.
With elections set for February 15th and 16th, Kenya’s delegation remains fully engaged in ensuring Mr. Odinga’s victory. President William Ruto, who also serves as the AU Champion on Institutional Reforms, has been actively rallying support for his candidacy. According to Government Spokesperson Hon. Sen. (Dr.) Isaac Mwaura, a Raila Odinga-led AUC would complement President Ruto’s efforts to drive critical institutional reforms, strengthening the African Union’s effectiveness and making it more responsive to the needs of its people.
In a remarkable display of patriotism, thousands of Kenyans—including members of the Kenyan diaspora in Ethiopia—have voluntarily traveled to Addis Ababa to stand in solidarity with Kenya and Mr. Odinga. Dr. Mwaura emphasized that Kenya’s official delegation remains appropriately sized in accordance with diplomatic protocols. Any other Kenyans who have made the journey have done so at their own expense, moved by their deep belief in Mr. Odinga’s leadership and the future of the African Union.
As the continent looks ahead to this crucial election, Kenya remains optimistic that Mr. Odinga’s vast experience, deep-rooted pan-African credentials, and transformative vision will resonate with AU member states, leading to a successful outcome.
“Kenya remains confident that Mr. Odinga’s leadership will bring about the reforms and progress that the African Union needs,” Dr. Mwaura stated. “His candidacy represents the aspirations of a united, forward-looking Africa.”
