Nairobi, Kenya – Kenya’s construction industry is set for a major transformation following the introduction of the National Building Code 2024, which replaces the 1968 Local Government (Adoptive By-Laws) (Building) Order.

Published as Legal Notice No. 47 on March 1, 2024, by Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, the code was officially launched on July 17, 2024, by Public Works PS Joel Arumonyang at the Mukuru Affordable Housing site. Developed under the National Construction Authority (NCA) Act, the new framework provides clear guidelines for planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining buildings.

Key Provisions:

  • Enhanced safety and structural standards
  • Environmental sustainability measures
  • Mandatory electric vehicle charging ports
  • Use of green building materials
  • Improved accessibility requirements

Eng. Maurice Akech, CEO of NCA, emphasized that the new code promotes innovation, collaboration, and resilience in the built environment. While implementation challenges such as costs and compliance resistance may arise, the long-term benefits outweigh initial hurdles.

Developers, contractors, and homeowners are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new regulations to ensure compliance. Enforcement will be overseen by government agencies such as the NCA to uphold safety and sustainability standards.
