Kenya Women Parliamentarians Push for Stronger Immunization Financing

Nairobi, Kenya – April 2, 2025
The Kenya Women Parliamentarians Association (KEWOPA) has called for increased domestic funding for immunization programs to reduce reliance on donor support. Meeting with the Health NGOs Network (HENNET), KEWOPA emphasized the urgency of securing sustainable vaccine financing for Kenyan children.
Led by Teso South MP Hon. Mary Emaase Otucho, the legislators stressed that immunization is a public health priority that should not depend on fluctuating donor contributions. Hon. Emaase urged the government to strengthen budget allocations for vaccines and uphold financial commitments to immunization programs.
“Immunization is a lifeline for children. Kenya must reduce donor dependency and take ownership of its healthcare financing,” Hon. Emaase stated.
The discussions highlighted the need for Kenya to fulfill its vaccine co-financing obligations, strengthen legislative support for health budgets, and prioritize local vaccine production. As a member of the Budget Committee, Hon. Emaase committed to advocating for increased funding for vaccine manufacturing and immunization efforts.
KEWOPA’s push aligns with Kenya’s broader goal of achieving financial self-sufficiency in healthcare, ensuring consistent vaccine access for all children. The call for stronger investment marks a crucial step toward securing long-term immunization funding and reducing the risk of vaccine shortages.
