Rarieda MP Dr. Hon. Otiende Amolo, SC, EBS, has taken a firm stand for the rights of widowed persons, calling for urgent legislative and policy reforms to address the systemic challenges they face.

Speaking at the High-Level Consultative Forum on the Rights of Widowed Persons held at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), Dr. Amolo described his participation as both an honour and a moral duty.

“It was an honour and a humbling experience to present on the legislative and policy framework concerning the rights and welfare of widowed persons,” he said, highlighting the need for inclusive, rights-based laws that provide social protection and economic support.

The event convened key voices in government and civil society, including Justice and Constitutional Affairs CS Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen Cheptumo and NGEC Chair Hon. Joyce Jaldesa. Discussions focused on eliminating legal and cultural barriers that continue to marginalize widows and widowers.

Dr. Amolo emphasized that widowed persons, particularly women, are often subjected to inheritance disputes, social exclusion, and poverty, and that this must be met with bold legislative action.

“This forum must be a springboard toward enacting meaningful laws that safeguard the dignity of widowed individuals and promote justice,” he added.

The consultative forum represents growing momentum for cross-sectoral collaboration, aimed at delivering lasting protections and equity for Kenya’s widowed population.
