Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will be flying the Wiper Party flag in the Mombasa gubernatorial race,a move that has been received d
With mixed reactions.
Sonko, a prolific and and hands-on on modern political mobiliser, has set his eyes on the lucrative Mombasa seat, tilting the odds for candidates who had already hit the ground running.
After rising to the level of being Nairobi governor in a span of eight years after joining politics,Sonko has successfully endeared himself to youthful supporters-packaging himself as a defender of the urban poor and less fortunate in the society.
Pundits opine that his presence in the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition is a big win for Raila Odinga who is the presidential flag bearer.
Political Cyrus Bukachi believes that Sonko will help Raila wipe out the inroads made by Deputy President William Ruto at the Coast.
” He is a darling of the young, urban poor and the downtrodden. At the Coast, these people are going to listen to him and even those who love him in Nairobi will take his word with finality,”
Sonko got over 800,000 votes in 2017 to beat ODMs Evans Kidero who got 700,000 votes.
In Mombasa,Sonko is coming up against a raging tide of Mvita MP AbduNassir who bagged the ODM ticket over businessman Suleiman Shahbal.
But analysts argue that having all the three powerful leaders rooting support for Raila Odinga on the ground is a big win.
Recent opinion polls have revealed a seemingly fading support base of Raila at the Coast, especially in Kwale and Kilifi counties.
It will be interesting to see how Sonko will help bring back the Orange glory which has now metamorphosized to Azimio La Umoja.
