Raising Awareness: The Fight Against Kidney Cancer

By John Kariuki
March is Kidney Cancer Awareness Month, a crucial time to educate people about renal cell carcinoma, one of the top ten most common cancers. Despite its prevalence, kidney cancer is often detected in late stages, making early screening and awareness essential.
Dr. Catherine Nyongesa, a leading oncologist and Managing Director of Texas Cancer Center, highlights key risk factors, including smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and family history. Exposure to harmful chemicals and poor lifestyle choices also contribute to the disease.
Early detection improves survival rates. Symptoms such as blood in the urine, back pain, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue should not be ignored. Regular check-ups and imaging tests can help catch the disease early.
Prevention strategies include quitting smoking, eating a balanced diet, staying active, and managing blood pressure. This March, the focus is on spreading awareness, encouraging early detection, and supporting those affected. Knowledge saves lives!
