Gathoni Wamuchomba Condemns Police Brutality Against Butere Girls Drama Team

Githunguri MP Hon. Gathoni Wamuchomba has strongly condemned the use of teargas on Butere Girls High School students during their drama festival performance, calling it an unacceptable act of state brutality.
The students were reportedly performing a politically themed play when security forces dispersed the gathering with teargas, causing panic and distress among the schoolgirls. Hon. Wamuchomba described the incident as a direct attack on free expression and a violation of children’s rights.
“To teargas schoolgirls for expressing artistic truth is an outrageous abuse of power,” she stated. “This is a shameful assault on our democracy and must not go unpunished.”
Calling for accountability, Wamuchomba urged lawmakers, civil society, and human rights organizations to demand an investigation and prosecution of those responsible. “We cannot normalize the criminalization of free thought and artistic expression,” she asserted.
The incident has sparked national outrage, with many decrying the increasing suppression of civic spaces. Critics warn that such actions reflect a growing intolerance for dissent, raising concerns about Kenya’s democratic trajectory.
As pressure mounts on authorities to respond, Wamuchomba’s call for justice has amplified demands for greater protection of free speech—especially for the youth, who should be encouraged to engage in civic discourse, not silenced through force.
