CS Miano Joins DP Kindiki in Laikipia, Signals Bold Shift in Human-Wildlife Conflict Response

Laikipia, Kenya – Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano joined Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on a high-stakes visit to Laikipia County, reaffirming the government’s commitment to tackle the region’s escalating human-wildlife conflict.
Laikipia, a biodiversity hotspot, has long suffered from recurring wildlife incursions that leave behind human tragedy and economic loss. Addressing residents and local leaders, CS Miano was unequivocal: “We must protect our wildlife, but never at the cost of our people’s lives and livelihoods.”
Citing President Ruto’s tech-driven compensation model launched in Rumuruti, Miano emphasized transparency and speed in supporting affected communities. She also revealed ongoing efforts to scale up smart fencing, ranger training, and deeper community involvement in wildlife planning.
“Communities are not just stakeholders—they’re the frontline,” Miano declared. “We owe them policies that reflect that reality.”
Sources within the ministry indicate Miano is spearheading a multi-agency strategy that balances conservation with safety, signaling a new era of conflict-sensitive wildlife management.
Her presence alongside the Deputy President underscores a growing political will to shift from reactive crisis response to proactive, people-first conservation.
