The recent completion of the Dongo Kundu Bypass in Kenya’s coastal region is generating widespread excitement within the tourism industry, particularly among tour and travel operators.
The new 17-kilometer bypass, an impressive feat of engineering, is expected to significantly boost tourism by making the South Coast more accessible to both local and international visitors.
The bypass, which includes the country’s largest bridge, the 1.4-kilometer Mteza Bridge, along with the Tsunza Viaduct (690 meters) and Mwache Bridge (660 meters), is designed to drastically reduce travel time to popular destinations like Diani Beach. What once required over five hours via the Likoni Crossing Channel can now be completed in under an hour when traveling from Moi International Airport or the SGR Miritini station. This improvement is anticipated to greatly enhance the region’s appeal to tourists.
Beyond easing travel, the Dongo Kundu Bypass is also paving the way for future economic growth. The development of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone and the Mombasa Gate Bridge is expected to follow, further bolstering the region’s economic prospects.
Simon Kabu, the Founder, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer of Bonfire Adventures, one of Kenya’s leading tour and travel companies, expressed his enthusiasm about the new infrastructure.
“This is a welcome development which presents a unique opportunity to tap into the untouched and underexploited tourism potential in the South Coast,” Kabu stated. “We encourage our clients to take advantage of this infrastructural development to plan their December holiday early in advance.”
The completion of the Dongo Kundu Bypass marks a significant milestone for Kenya’s coastal tourism sector. As the new infrastructure makes travel easier and faster, the South Coast is expected to see a surge in tourist activity, benefiting local businesses and contributing to the region’s overall economic development. The bypass is set to transform the area into a thriving hub for tourism, with industry leaders like Kabu eager to capitalize on the opportunities it presents.
