The government has announced an ambitious nationwide animal vaccination program targeting 22 million cattle and 50 million sheep and goats. The initiative aims to safeguard the livestock sector, a vital contributor to economic development and job creation in Kenya.
Dr. Isaak Noor, Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Leather Development Council, lauded the program, emphasizing its importance in protecting animal and public health, reducing animal suffering, and ensuring efficient livestock production to meet the demands of a growing population.
“Healthier animals produce high-quality hides and skins that fetch competitive prices in the global market,” Dr. Noor remarked, highlighting the critical role of vaccination in elevating the quality of Kenyan livestock products.
The hides, skins, and leather industry is a key agricultural sub-sector with significant potential to drive rural development, create wealth, and generate employment. Dr. Noor stressed that adopting best practices, including comprehensive vaccination, is essential to unlocking the sector’s full economic potential and ensuring Kenya remains competitive in the global market.
The program reflects the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable livestock production while bolstering industries like leather that rely on quality livestock by-products.
