The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) Board of Directors has firmly dismissed allegations circulating on social media regarding its governance and leadership. In a statement issued on behalf of over 16,000 MCSK members, the Board reiterated its full confidence in the stewardship of CEO Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, MBS.
The Board described the social media claims as “malicious propaganda” intended to discredit Dr. Mutua and undermine his management team. The statement emphasized that Dr. Mutua has revitalized the organization since his appointment nearly two years ago, significantly advancing the rights of musicians in Kenya.
Achievements Under Dr. Mutua’s Leadership
Chairman Dr. Lazarus Muli highlighted Dr. Mutua’s “charisma, vibrancy, and visibility,” noting his passion for the music industry and his strategic initiatives to promote local talent and protect artists’ rights. “Dr. Mutua has leveraged his extensive local and international networks to uplift MCSK members and the Kenyan music industry as a whole,” the statement said.
Legal Action Against Alleged Saboteurs
The Board condemned the individuals behind the social media campaign, accusing them of filing false documents with the Registrar of Companies to fraudulently claim directorship of MCSK. These actions, according to the Board, were part of an orchestrated effort to block MCSK elections and to exploit funds collected through the Private Copying Remuneration (Blank Tape Levy).
“These culprits are working with cartels intent on misappropriating musicians’ royalties and introducing a corrupt licensing system to fleece artists,” the statement alleged. The Board has initiated legal proceedings against the accused and pledged full support for Dr. Mutua as he pursues defamation charges.
Next Steps and Governance Measures
To ensure transparency in governance, the MCSK Board announced plans to hold national elections in compliance with the organization’s Memorandum and Articles of Association. The elections, scheduled within two weeks, will be supervised by the Office of the Registrar of Companies and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The Board also resolved to take disciplinary action against MCSK members found participating in the alleged irregularities. These matters will be addressed at the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Commitment to Artists
The Board concluded by reaffirming its dedication to supporting Kenya’s music industry and protecting the interests of its members. “We stand united with our CEO in advancing the rights of musicians and ensuring that the industry remains free from exploitation,” the statement declared.
This decisive stance underscores MCSK’s determination to maintain integrity and transparency while fostering a vibrant and equitable music sector.
