Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco has pledged to enhance the safety of probation officers following last week’s tragic shooting at the Makadara law courts, which resulted in the death of a magistrate.
During a debriefing session at the Nairobi probation hostel in Makadara, Dr. Beacco addressed probation officers, emphasizing their crucial role in the criminal justice system. She described Thursday’s shooting as unprecedented and assured the officers that measures have been implemented to ensure their safety.
“One of the greatest conquests against your enemy is refusing to be discouraged. Continue with what you have been doing; the best days are ahead of you,” Dr. Beacco encouraged the probation officers.
Dr. Beacco also highlighted that the State Department for Correctional Services has initiated psychosocial support for officers affected by the incident, particularly the nine officers who were present during the shooting. This support aligns with the department’s theme for the year: mental wellness for effective service delivery, a theme being emphasized across all regions.
Following her meeting with the probation officers, Dr. Beacco visited the Makadara law courts to join judicial officers in mourning Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti. She honored the late Kivuti as an exemplary jurist and defender of justice, urging judiciary members to remain undeterred by the incident and to continue their steadfast commitment to justice and the rule of law.
The PS’s visit and words of support have been seen as a significant morale boost for the probation officers and judiciary members, reinforcing the government’s dedication to their safety and well-being in the wake of the tragic event.
