Mombasa, Kenya – Uganda emerged victorious in the athletics competition of the 14th East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games, topping the medal table with 9 gold, 10 silver, and 5 bronze medals. Host nation Kenya finished a commendable second with 3 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals, buoyed by standout performances at the Mbaraki Sports Club.
Kenya’s highlight came from Ruiru MP Hon. Simon Kingara, who delivered a thrilling win in the men’s 1600m race walk, clocking 9:42.6 to outpace Uganda’s Hon. Ocan Patrick. In the women’s race walk, Senator Crystal Asige, who is visually impaired, inspired fans with her participation. Guided by an aide, Sen. Asige expressed hope for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in future competitions. “I hope more PWDs can participate in different disciplines. As leaders, we pave the way for others to say, ‘If Asige did it, so can I,’” she stated.
Kenya’s 4x400m relay team also impressed, showcasing stellar teamwork with a time of 4:25.45. Tanzania secured third place overall with 2 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze medals, highlighted by Hon. Anathropia Theonest’s victory in the women’s 800m final.
