In a major relief for Nairobi residents, the Mega Karimenu II Dam Bulk Water System is now set to begin supplying over 23 million liters of clean water daily. This follows the successful completion of the bulk water connection to the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) Kiambu Reservoir, enabling the Karimenu Water Treatment Plant to operate at full capacity.

The Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) Board of Directors, led by Chairperson Charles Karondo, conducted a thorough inspection of the mega project, including the Karimenu II Dam, Water Treatment Plant, and the storage tanks in Juja and Ruiru. Speaking during the tour, Karondo expressed satisfaction with the completion of the connection, which is expected to significantly enhance the water supply to Nairobi’s residents.

“Nairobi residents can expect a noticeable improvement in their water supply as the system is now fully connected to the Kiambu Reservoir,” Karondo stated. “The Karimenu Water Treatment Plant had been operating at half capacity, but with this completion, the project can now function at maximum capacity, ensuring that the public has access to a sufficient and reliable water supply.”

The Board Chairperson was accompanied by several key officials during the inspection, including Board Members Dr. Boaz Cheluget, Simon Mukhwana, and Eng. James Wainaina, as well as PS Representative to the Board Francis Bor, AWWDA CEO Eng. Joseph Kamau, Director of Infrastructure Development Eng. Bonnie Nyandwaro, Company Secretary CS Joyce Mukururi, Deputy Director of Bulk Water Eng. Carol Owako, and Assistant Director of Sewerage Works Eng. Dickson Ongesa.

The completion of the Karimenu II Dam project is a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to address Nairobi’s water challenges, which have plagued the city for years. The dam, located in Kiambu County, is one of the key projects under the government’s initiative to improve water infrastructure and ensure the provision of clean, safe water to all Kenyans.

With Nairobi’s growing population and increasing demand for water, the completion of this project comes at a crucial time. The improved water supply is expected to benefit not only households but also businesses and industries in the region, contributing to the overall economic growth and well-being of the city.

As the system begins its full-scale operation, Nairobi residents can look forward to a more consistent and dependable water supply, alleviating the water shortages that have long been a challenge in the capital. The project is also expected to reduce the burden on other water sources, ensuring a more sustainable water management system for the future.
