The Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Hon. Zachariah Njeru, EGH, was the Chief Guest at the County Dissemination Forum in Nakuru town today. Representing H.E. President William Ruto, the CS was joined by Principal Secretary for the State Department of Environment and Climate Change, Eng. Festus Ng’eno, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Lands and Physical Planning, Nixon Korir, and Nakuru Deputy Governor, H.E. Kones.

The forum marked the launch of the Medium Term Plans (MTP) 2023-2027, which aims to reduce the cost of living, eradicate poverty, create 1.2 million new jobs annually, expand the tax base, improve the foreign exchange balance, and enhance inclusive growth. This initiative focuses on targeted investments in five core pillars: Agriculture, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Economy (MSMEs), Housing and Settlement, Healthcare, and the Digital Superhighway and Creative Economy.

Implemented through five sectors—Finance and Production, Infrastructure, Social, Environment and Natural Resources, and Governance and Public Administration—the 4th MTP aligns with international commitments such as the United Nations Agenda 2030 on Sustainable Development and the Africa Agenda 2063. These plans inform sector strategies, County Integrated Development Plans (CIDPs), Strategic Plans, and Annual Performance Contracts for various government bodies.

Hon. Njeru emphasized the significance of this initiative: “This MTP will drive Kenya’s economic and social transformation by leveraging targeted investments across key sectors.”

Key projects in Nakuru under this program include:

  • Operationalization of the Naivasha Special Economic Zone
  • Construction of a maize milling plant at Naivasha Prisons
  • Establishment of Africa’s first and only green energy data center at Ol-Karia
  • Completion of 605 affordable housing units in Bondeni
  • Construction of Dundori market stalls
  • Installation and maintenance of the Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) at main junctions in Nakuru
  • Modernization and equipping of the Nakuru Depot at Nakuru Railway Station to enhance cargo handling

Following the presentation, Hon. Njeru addressed questions from attendees and the media, reiterating the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability. In line with the policy to plant 15 billion trees by 2032, he led National and County government teams in a tree-planting ceremony at Nakuru Girls School.

The CS was accompanied by Deputy Director of Irrigation Management Mr. Maurice Opondo, Nakuru County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara, and his security team, underscoring the collaborative effort in driving the country’s development agenda.

This dissemination forum is part of a broader campaign running from 3rd to 12th June 2024, aimed at engaging various stakeholders in the implementation of the 4th MTP.
