Key leaders of the Pastoralist Parliamentary Group, led by Patron Hon. Rasso, Col (Rtd) Dido (MP for Saku), and Chairman Hon. Bashir Abdullahi (MP for Mandera North), convened to review the implementation of resolutions from last week’s Pastoralist Leadership Summit in Wajir.

The summit brought together leaders and stakeholders to address challenges facing pastoralist communities, with a focus on improving livelihoods and strengthening the sector. A key highlight from the follow-up meeting was the operationalization of the National Livestock Development and Promotion Service (NLDP), a critical agency aimed at boosting Kenya’s livestock sector.

The NLDP will promote livestock marketing locally and internationally, increasing demand for Kenyan livestock and ensuring better prices for pastoralists. By enhancing market access, improving infrastructure, and promoting sustainable practices, the service seeks to transform the sector into a competitive and sustainable industry.

Hon. Rasso and Hon. Abdullahi commended the progress and reiterated their commitment to implementing summit resolutions, particularly those targeting economic empowerment, livestock health, education, and infrastructure development in pastoralist regions. They emphasized the sector’s significant contribution to Kenya’s GDP and its importance to millions in arid and semi-arid areas.

The meeting underscored the need for continued collaboration among stakeholders to unlock the full potential of Kenya’s livestock sector, bringing tangible improvements to pastoralist communities and advancing their role in the national economy.
