The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has suspended the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) License for a proposed restaurant and golf range in the Miotoni block of Ngong Road Forest. The suspension, announced on December 18, 2024, raises ecological and safety concerns over the projectβs impact on the sensitive forest ecosystem.
The Ngong Road Forest is recognized for its high biodiversity and environmental importance, making it a critical public resource. NEMA highlighted that the projectβs location along a pipeline wayleave further complicates its feasibility, necessitating a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) to evaluate potential risks to the environment, infrastructure, and public safety.
Field inspections revealed the need for a more comprehensive environmental assessment with meaningful public participation. NEMA invoked the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) of 1999, mandating the project proponent, Karura Golf Range Limited, to submit a revised EIA report. All project activities have been halted until further review.
NEMAβs action underscores its commitment to sustainable development and ecosystem conservation. By halting the project, the agency aims to protect Ngong Forestβs ecological integrity and ensure Kenyaβs environmental resources are preserved for future generations.
