The launch event, held at a Nairobi hotel, introduced an initiative backed by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and the IGAD Centre of Excellence for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (ICEPCVE). The program’s focus is to address the socioeconomic drivers of extremism and lay the foundation for sustained peace across the region.

During his remarks, Omollo emphasized the essential role of collaboration in countering extremism’s root causes, particularly youth unemployment, which he highlighted as a critical factor in the region’s radicalization issues.

“One of the main causes of violent extremism is youth unemployment,” Omollo stated. “To counter the growing threat of extremism, we must empower our youth through economic opportunities that offer them alternatives to radicalization.”

The program will prioritize creating economic opportunities, promoting development, and building resilient communities capable of resisting extremist ideologies. By focusing on inclusive development, the initiative aims to support marginalized groups and reinforce local capacities to counter violent extremism from within.

Omollo expressed hope for a future where socioeconomic stability leads to lasting peace. “By addressing the socioeconomic factors that fuel extremism, we are not only securing a better future for the region but also promoting stability and peace,” he noted.

This launch signals the start of a long-term commitment to peace and security in East Africa, supported by both regional governments and international partners. As East Africa continues to face security challenges, the program offers a path toward resilience, where communities are empowered and the risk of extremism is reduced through sustainable development and economic empowerment.
