Garissa Governor Nathif Jama Adam met with CPA Ephantus Kimotho, Principal Secretary for Irrigation, and National Irrigation Authority CEO Eng. Charles Muasya to discuss the transformative High Grand Falls Dam project.
The project, designed to address recurrent flash floods along the Tana River, will impound 5,600 million cubic meters of water, creating opportunities for irrigation and flood mitigation. PS Kimotho assured Governor Adam that the initiative aims to expand irrigation infrastructure to support 500,000 acres of farmland, boosting agricultural productivity in Garissa and surrounding areas.
Notably, the project includes new components such as a hydrogen fertilizer production plant for commercial farming and a 500 MW greenfield solar power system. These additions reflect government efforts to reduce costs by KSh 100 billion in collaboration with private partners while broadening the project’s scope.
Governor Adam praised the government’s commitment to food security and urged for the timely completion of the project, highlighting its potential to transform northern Kenya and mitigate climate challenges. Eng. Muasya provided updates on implementation plans, emphasizing benefits for local communities.
The meeting reinforced the importance of collaboration in driving sustainable development and enhancing resilience in the region.
